From the Wikipedia entry on "Carpetbaggers":
"Three groups comprised the Republican Party in the South after the Civil War, and conservative white Southerners referred to two with derogatory terms. "Scalawags" were white Southerners who supported the party, "carpetbaggers" were recent arrivals in the region from the North, and freedmen were freed slaves.
It's so good to be reassured that conservative white Southerners never referred to the freed black former slaves with any derogatory terms.
Oh, and if carpetbagger and scalwag were pejorative terms, why does the rest of the entry (and textbooks today, for that matter) continue to use those terms in matter-of-fact, non-ironic normalizing ways? Biased much?
